Since its set up in 2001, the SMF Research Grant Programme has been promoting research through the award of post graduate research scholarships tenable at NUS, NTU and Research Institutes in Singapore, and funding research programmes in selected areas.
More than 200 post graduate research scholarships were awarded. These scholarships included supporting clinician scientists in their research endeavors.
From 2010, the SMF Research Grant Programme discontinued its scholarship schemes and channeled its funds to support smaller niche research programmes in Singapore. The research programmes supported include Liver Cancer, Parkinson Disease, Neuromuscular Disease, Bio-fuel and Mental Health.
In 2011, SMF Research Grant Programme initiated grant calls opened to researchers from NUS, NTU, NIE and selected Research Institutes. It has awarded research grants in Learning & Pedagogy, Ageing & Palliative Care and Non-medical Bio-Science.
The research focus areas were refined in 2017 to the following: Learning & Pedagogy, Palliative Care and Food Supply Resiliency & Bio-Mimetics.
To date, there have been eight grant calls, with a ninth grant call in progress.
